2023 U.S. Home Sales Was Worst Year in 3 Decades Says NAR

According to the National Association of Realtors, U.S. existing-home sales retreated again in December 2023. Among the four major U.S. regions, sales slipped in the Midwest and South, rose in the West and were unchanged in the Northeast. All four regions experienced year-over-year sales decreases.

U.S. Construction Materials Input Prices Fall Sharply in December

According to the Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Producer Price Index data, U.S. construction input prices decreased 0.6% in December 2023 compared to the previous month. Nonresidential construction input prices decreased 0.4% for the month.

U.S. Mortgage Applications Jump 10 Percent in the First Week of 2024

According to the Mortgage Bankers Association's latest Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending January 5, 2024, U.S. mortgage applications increased 9.9 percent from one week earlier. The results include an adjustment to account for the New Year's holiday.

U.S. Mortgage Rates End 2023 on the Decline

Based on Freddie Mac's latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 6.61 percent as of December 28, 2023.
